According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center at UAB, the distribution of the causes of SCI have changed drastically since 2010.Researchers have estimated that, as of 2015, 12500 new SCI occur each year and between 240,000 and 337,000 people are currently living with SCI in the United States.

The average age at injury has moved from 29 years in the 1970's to 42 years in 2015.

The length of hospital stays is declining with the average stay in hospital acute care at 11 days - down from 24 in the 1970's - and rehabilitations stays at 36 days - down from 98 days in the 1970's.

Spinal Cord Injuries between 2010 and 2015

  • Vehicular 38%
  • Falls 30%
  • Violence (attacks and gunshot wounds) 14%
  • Sports and recreation activities 9%
  • Medical or surgical causes 5%
  • Other causes 4%

Here’s some statistics and information gathered in the United States of America. Information shows that more than 250,000 Americans suffer from the consequences of spinal cord injury. 52% of spinal cord injured patients are considered paraplegic. 47% of the injured end up as quadriplegic patients. Nearly 11,000 new injuries occur every year. 82% of the injured patients are male. Almost 56% of injuries occur between the ages of 16 and 30 years. The average age of spinal cord injured person is 31 years old.

Spinal Cord Injuries are most commonly caused by:

  • Vehicular accidents 37%
  • Violence 28%
  • Falls 21%
  • Related to sports 6%
  • Other causes 8%

The most rapidly increasing nubers are caused by injuries due to violence. Meanwhile vehicular accident injuries are decreasing in number.

89% of all SCI patients are discharged from hospitals to a private home, while 4.3% are discharged to specialized services such as nursing homes. Only 52% of SCI individuals are covered by private health insurance at time of injury.

What do SCI’s (Spinal cord injuries) cost in reality?

Here is some detailed information about average costs of services and medication, accordint to data, provided by The University of Alabama National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center in March 2002.

The average length of initial hospitalization following injury in acute care units is 15 days. The average stay in rehabilitation unit is 44 days.  The initial hospitalization costs following an SCI in the US is $140,000.

Research shows that costs for after-injury care and medication are even more:

The average first year expenses for a SCI injury for all groups of patients is $198,000.

First year expenses for paraplegics are $152,000 on the average, while first year expenses for quadriplegics is way higher - $417,000. The average lifetime costs for paraplegics (age of injury 25 y.o.) is $428,000 as of 2002. The lifetime costs for quadriplegics is $1.35 million average.

Statistics shows that there seems to be no apparent relationship between the severity of Spinal cord injury and admission in a nursing home. This is and indicator that nursing home admission is often caused by other factors. Nursing home admission tends to be more common among elderly patients.

Between 1/3 to 1/2 of all SCI patients are re-admitted in a hospital every year. No significant difference is seen in re-admissions rate between patients with paraplegia and quadriplegia. However there is a difference between the rate for patients with complete and incomplete Spinal cord injuries.

Main causes of death, related to SCI cases

Among the most common causes of death related to SCI nowadays is respiratory ailment, whereas in the past it was renal failure. According to US statistics data there is an increasing number of people with Spinal cord injuries who are dying of unrelated causes. Soe of these causes are cancer or cardiovascular disease, very similar to the results shown in the general population. Mortality rates are significantly higher during the first year after injury.

Survival rates of SCI cases

85% of SCI patients who survive the first 24 hours are still alive 10 years later, compared with 98% of the non-SCI population given similar age and sex.
